Change Management Change is steady. Change in associations is said to regularly be made in three territories: 1) structure, for example new administrations or projects; 2) innovation, for example modification in hardware as well as computerization; and 3) individuals, for example choice, recruiting, preparing, connections, and perspectives. Change the executives is a procedure intended to progress from the state of affairs to some new perfect method of working together. Change the board has been characterized as ‘the procedure of persistently restoring an associations course, structure, and capacities to serve the ever-changing necessities of outside and inside clients (Moran and Brightman, 2001, pg. 111). As indicated by Burnes (2004) change is an ever-present element of authoritative life, both at an operational and key level. Along these lines, there ought to be no uncertainty with respect to the significance to any association of its capacity to distinguish where it should be later on, and h ow to deal with the progressions required arriving. Thus, authoritative change can't be isolated from hierarchical technique, or the other way around (Burnes, 2004; Rieley and Clarkson, 2001). Because of the significance of authoritative change, its administration is turning into an exceptionally required administrative ability (Senior, 2002). 3. Change Management Process Authoritative change can be depicted as the way toward moving ceaselessly from a present condition to understand some future state. Change the executives includes dealing with the way toward accomplishing this future state. As per Nickols, (2004), change can be seen from two vantage focuses, that of the individuals rolling out the improvements and that of the individuals encountering the changes. In the top-down procedure, or vital perspective related with the board, the emphasis is on specialized issues, for example, the venture required, the procedures for executing the change, how soon the change can be acknowledged, and the result. During the time spent base up perspective of the worker, the attention is on what the change intends to the individual, how they can adapt to the change, and furthermore how the executives can help them through the progress. In this unique circumstance, successful change the executives ought to have the option to assist people with developing from pess imistic sentiments, for example, dread and uneasiness towards constructive emotions about the progressions being made. Successful change the executives manages diagnosing issues and deciding an elective that includes changing the authoritative structure or procedures. It additionally recognizes and manages the individual reactions to change that can impede the achievement of the undertaking. To comprehend change the board better, we have to comprehend the different models and systems that directors may follow. A portion of the models incorporate the Leadership model, Improvisational Model, Theory E versus Theory O, and the ADKAR model (Please Refer Appendix A1) 4. Harley Davidson Transformation Process The Harley Davidson change started with an organization that was torment. In the 10 years to 1983, Harleys piece of the pie of the 850 CC in addition to cruiser class had dropped from 80% to 23%. The organization was draining money and benefits. Staffs were dampened. The way of life and condition was poisonous. As per Jenkinson Sain, (2009), the Transformation procedure of the Harley Davidson was isolated into two stages: First Phase: The primary period of the change included defense and intense order and control the board. This was First period of progress the board procedure. It was insufficient anyway to make accomplishment for this inspiration and duty of Harley Davidson. Hence Harley Davidson chose to go second period of the change procedure (Jenkinson Sain, 2009). Second Phase: The second period of the administration was center coordinated advertising of Harley Davidson. Harley Davidson needed to move out of money related guideline and influence administration into shared promoting duty towards vision and worth dependent on an aggregate valuation for the Harley character (Jenkinson Sain, 2009). Harleys issues started it was the organization was sub streamlined inside, with numerous threatening administration/association connections, and neglected to coordinate the market in client esteem. The Japanese didn't make the issue: they uncovered the issue. Numerous organizations share this issue. They may have prevailing with regards to keeping away from the outrageous issues that Harley had, frequently by powerful first stage the executives. The test of is to move into second stage. Second stages Integrated Marketing relies first upon joining everybody around an aggregate vision of significant worth that associates with the character and motivation behind the association/brand. This relies upon a significant and shared comprehension of clients and an association that can convey esteem consistently all through all client encounters over the relationship. This additionally implies associating and coordinating profound with pragmatic characteristics: vision, reason, values with data , procedures, and frameworks (Henshaw Kerr, 2001). 5. Usage of Transformation process There are various components that influence the procedures utilized for change the board (Please allude Appendix B1), and eventually whether the change is compelling. One lot of variables is the means by which safe individuals are to change. Individuals may oppose change since they are uncertain of how it influences them, misconstrue the changes, have an alternate evaluation of the present and future condition, or basically have a low resilience for change. A subsequent factor is the desperation of the change. How significant is it, and that it is so basic to the business needs of the association? This likewise influences the time span under which the progressions should be executed. A third factor is how prepared is the association for the change? Does it have the right stuff and information expected to execute the change? At long last, the executives will have favored procedures for dealing with the change. This may be founded on exploration and studies they have made, or from past encounters (Kotter, 1996). In the event that we take a gander at the different models (Please allude Appendix A1) for transform, it is obvious that there a

The planning of the tasks is useful for the organization of the improved framework advancement. As per Snyder and Diesing (2015), the planning of the capacities are lined up with the successful dynamic procedure (one-sided, specialist, group understanding, master, or accord). The sharing of the data is lined up with the sending of the tasks for the thought of the effective joining activities. The help of the route for the arrangement of the choice is additionally required. As expressed by Azar, Bouaynaya and Polikar, (2015), the training includes the development of the investigation of the venture and becoming more acquainted with about the ta sks. The affirmation of the undertaking tasks are useful for settling with the arrangement of the strong organization of the improvement of the activities. The consideration of the tasks is conveyed for the arrangement of the incorporation strategies (Karimi, Papamichail Holland, 2015). We have to stay aware of our responsibilities for building up the activities for compelling remodel of the focal library. Use of Decision Making Practice to the Scenario Selected The key dynamic practices are characterizing the choice to be taken, foundation of the choice measures, assurance of the particular dynamic procedure (one-sided, specialist, group understanding, master, or agreement), groundwork for the procedure, and route to the accomplishment of the choice (Snyder Diesing, 2015). We applied a similar procedure for taking the choice for the advancement of the dynamic procedure. The dynamic is useful for the arrangement of the improved utilitarian activities. The key dynamic is useful for completing the examination of the key dynamic procedure. The dynamic is useful for posting the administration of the achievement arrangement and examination. The choice taking circumstance that we have to consider was the likelihood of presentation of the children segment and thus, we needed to shape the thought for the sending of the progressive and fascinated activity improvement. We chose the procedure of group understanding for taking the choice of the undertaking. Be that as it may, we expected to incorporate the arrangement of the activities for dynamic with the assistance of practices. The planning of the procedure is useful for examining the current data and building u p a sound practice for the last undertaking deliverable. Tips on How to Effectively Set and Manage Goals

Tips on How to Effectively Set and Manage Goals PTSD Coping Print How to Make Goal-Setting Less Overwhelming When You Have PTSD By Matthew Tull, PhD twitter Matthew Tull, PhD is a professor of psychology at the University of Toledo, specializing in post-traumatic stress disorder. Goals  can give your life purpose and direction as well as motivate healthy behaviors focused on improving your life. However, goals can also be very overwhelming and a source of stress, especially if you are struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder or some other mental health disorder. Sometimes people set goals that are too lofty, difficult to attain or too far off in the future. This can bring about a sense of helplessness and hopelessness, increasing the risk for depression and low motivation. In addition, sometimes goals can send the message that where you are right now is not good enough, potentially bringing about feelings of shame and guilt. Therefore, you have to be careful when you set goals. It is important that goals are approached in a way that improves your mood and quality of life, as opposed to increasing distress. Tips to Make Goals Less Stressful and More Attainable Listed below are some tips on how to make goals less stressful. In addition to reducing distress, following these tips may also increase your likelihood of achieving goals. Break Your Goals Into Smaller Goals Large goals can often feel unattainable and far away. Therefore, it can be helpful to break down that larger goal in a series of smaller goals that you can achieve in the near future. Think of these smaller goals as the stepping stones that will eventually take you towards the larger goal you have set for yourself. Think About What Is Driving Your Goals When we set large goals that may take some time to achieve, we can sometimes forget why we set that goal in the first place. As a result, we may lose motivation in attempting to achieve that goal. To counter this, try to think of why you set this goal. What kind of values are driving your pursuit of this goal? For example, lets say that you set the goal of getting a college degree. You may have set this goal because you value education. Likewise, you may have set this goal because you value family and know that a college education may open up a number of opportunities for more financial security for you and your family. Reward Yourself for Making Progress   Oftentimes, once someone achieves a goal, they quickly move on to the next goal. Take some time to recognize your achievements. Reward yourself. Take yourself out to dinner or buy yourself a gift. Do something that marks the progress you have made. Give Yourself Permission to Change Goals Sometimes while pursuing a goal we may realize we no longer want that goal. Our interests may have changed or other goals may take priority. It can be hard not to complete a goal, especially after a lot of hard work has gone into pursuing that goal. Give yourself permission to focus attention on other goals. You are not giving up. You are just changing your focus. You will face worse consequences (low motivation, lack of interest) if you stick with the old goal despite not desiring it anymore. Be Aware of Perfectionism or High Standards No one is perfect and setting high standards can make goals feel even more overwhelming and difficult to attain. Setbacks will happen. This is okay. The most important thing is that you approach these setbacks with self-compassion (dont beat yourself up or blame yourselfâ€"that will only increase your distress) and re-commit to the pursuit of your goal. Let Others Know About Your Goals Some goals can take a tremendous amount of effort. Therefore, enlist the help of others. It can also be helpful for others to know what goals you are pursuing because they can keep you focused and committed at times when you may feel your motivation waning. Other people can also provide social support to help with anxiety and stress that may keep you from pursuing a goal. By following these tips, you will be much more likely to achieve your goals, increase your self-confidence and improve your quality of life. Goals can be very helpful; however, goals can bring about stress, anxiety and other unpleasant emotions, especially if you are already managing the demands of a mental health disorder. Therefore, it is very important to make sure that you are moving towards goals in a way that minimizes distress and maximizes success.

Wild Bees by James K. Baxter - 1218 Words

As people, we naturally â€Å"size people up,† or rather determine their value and treat them accordingly. If we come across someone with money or someone well known, we tend to determine that they have a higher value and place them on a high pedestal. Whereas, when we come across someone with noticeably less money seen in the way they dress, the type of house they live in, or what job they possess, and automatically assume their value is less, deeming them not as important as someone more well off. We essentially treat the wealthier better than the less fortunate. But what gives us the right to treat people differently? I ask the same questions while reading the â€Å"Wild Bees† by James K. Baxter. The poem addresses a group of boys†¦show more content†¦The issue of people defining another individual’s worth is conveyed through the boy’s defining the bee’s worth. Baxter describes how the bees appear to the boys stating the â€Å"wild bees , [are] swift as tigers, [with] gauzed wings a-glitter† (line 4) showing that the boys appreciate the beauty of the bees but find the bees strange and dangerous as well. Baxter goes on to write that the bees seemed to be in â€Å"passionless industry, clustering black at the crevice / Of a rotten cabbage tree† (lines 5-6). The phrasing â€Å"passionless industry† is metaphor comparing the bees to machines without emotions or feelings. In addition, the rotten cabbage tree symbolizes how the boys see the bee’s worth. The tree is considered unimportant due to its decaying and dying state, and therefore causes the bees to be determined as useless. The rotting tree even foreshadows that bees, too, shall join the tree in its festering state. After the boys determine that the bees were only machines, they assumed they had the right to kill them. The boys killing the bees show how the affects of devaluing a person, or in this case devaluing insects may manifest into violence. Violence is manifest after the boys decide the bees are nothing more than â€Å"passionless† machines. According to the CCSS, the skills required to master the concepts for the next level and after graduation of high school will be beneficial to all students. While this may be theore tically true students in low socioeconomic communities who attend low performing schools may be at a disadvantage. These schools are already having trouble with students performing at previous standards. Providing more challenging standards may prove to be insurmountable for these schools and students which may lead to jobs being lost and state legislators taking control of the school. The mathematical standards of the CCSS build upon the high quality of standards for mathematics across the United States. These standards are developed from the best international practices along with research and input from different experts and educators. Shakespeare, William The Taming Of The Shrew Essays -

Shakespeare, William: The Taming of the Shrew The Taming of the Shrew The Taming Of The Shrew by William Shakespeare is probably one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies. Its plot is derived from the popular 'war of the sexes' theme in which males and females are pitted against one another for dominance in marriage. The play begins with an induction in which a drunkard, Christopher Sly, is fooled into believing he is a king and has a play performed for him. The play he watches is what constitutes the main body of The Taming Of The Shrew. In it, a wealthy land owner, Baptista Minola, attempts to have his two daughters married. One is very shrewish, Katherine, while the other is the beautiful and gentle Bianca. In order to ensure Katherine is married, Baptista disallows Bianca to be espoused until Katherine is wed, forcing the many suitors to Bianca to find a mate for Katherine in order for them to vie for Bianca's love. Many critics of the play condemn it for the blatant sexist attitude it has toward women but closer examination of the play and the intricacies of its structure reveal that it is not merely a story of how men should 'put women in their place'. The play is, in fact, a comedy about an assertive woman coping with how she is expected to act in the society of the late sixteenth century and of how one must obey the unwritten rules of a society to be accepted in it. Although the play ends with her outwardly conforming to the norms of society, this is in action only, not in mind. Although she assumes the role of the obedient wife, inwardly she still retains her assertiveness. Most of the play's humour comes from the way in which characters create false realities by disguising themselves as other people, a device first introduced in the induction. Initially this is accomplished by having Christopher Sly believe he is someone he is not and then by having the main play performed for him. By putting The Taming Of The Shrew in a 'play within a play' structure, Shakespeare immediately lets the audience know that the play is not real thus making all events in the play false realities. Almost all characters in the play take on identities other than their own at some point of time during the play. Sly as a king, Tranio as Lucentio, Lucentio as Cambio, Hortensio as Litio and the pedant as Vicentio are all examples of this. Another example of this is Katherine as an obedient wife. In The Taming Of The Shrew, courtship and marriage are not so much the result of love but rather an institution of society that people are expected to take part in. As a result of the removal of romance from marriage, suitors are judged, not by their love for a woman, but by how well they can provide for her. All suitors compare the dowry each can bring to the marriage and the one with the most to offer 'wins' the woman's hand in marriage. This competition for marriage is like a game to the characters of the play. While discussing the courtship of Bianca with Gremio, Hortensio says "He that runs fastest gets\ The ring" (Act I, scene i, l. 140-141) likening receiving permission to wed Bianca to winning a race. In the game, however, women are treated like objects that can be bought and sold rather than as human beings. This is expected since the society is a patriarchal one. For example, Lucentio, Tranio and Petruchio are all defined with reference to their fathers and all the elderly authority figures, like Baptista and Vicentio, are men. The taming of Katherine is not a women's shrewishness being cured as much as it is a woman being taught the rules of the 'patriarchal game'. Katherine has learned how to be assertive and with this knowledge is able to control men, and a woman controlling a man is considered 'against the rules' of the game. The play ends with Katherine proving that she is truly cured of her 'shrewishness' and is the most obedient of the three newlywed wives at the end of

Regime vs. Regimen

Regime vs. Regimen Regime vs. Regimen Regime vs. Regimen By Mark Nichol What’s the difference between regime and regimen? In one sense, there is none, but in their most common connotations, one letter makes a lot of difference. Both terms stem ultimately from Latin regere, meaning â€Å"to direct.† They are related to other words starting with reg-, such as regular, regulate, and regulation. In addition, they are akin to other words referring to direction, including reign, right, and rule and ruler, as well as the element rect in, for example, direct and rectitude. The Hindi word raja, the German term reich, and the Latin form rex are also part of this regal family tree. Regime, borrowed from French (and sometimes, as in French, written in English as rà ©gime), can refer to a regular pattern or behavior of a natural phenomenon, but more often it denotes a form of management or rule, or a government or the duration of its rule. In this last sense, it generally has a negative connotation, implying a repressive, totalitarian government. The phrase â€Å"ancien rà ©gime,† sometimes styled with initial capital letters, refers to the sociopolitical system in France during the several centuries preceding that country’s revolution in 1789 and, coined by revolutionaries, was a derogatory dismissal of the outmoded model of government. (However, to others it conveyed a nostalgia for a time when aristocrats, not the bourgeoisie, set cultural standards.) The generic term, as well as the Anglicized form â€Å"ancient regime† or the translation â€Å"old regime,† refers to any such ineffectual and/or corrupt government or management. Regimen was borrowed directly from Latin into Middle English to refer to a direction, a set of rules, or a position of authority. It is, in one sense, synonymous with regime to denote rule but is now rarely used for that meaning; more often it pertains to a training system, as for athletes, or a plan intended to improve one’s health. One other word closely related to regime and regimen is regiment. It, too, once referred to rule, but now its primary sense as a noun is a reference to a military unit that originally numbered about a thousand soldiers but in modern armies varies widely according to a unit’s particular function. The term is also used as a verb synonymous with organize, in the sense that a regiment is neatly arrayed in marching and inspection formations. However, the connotation of the verb form is often negative, implying excessive control. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? 40 Twitter Hashtags for Writers

40 Twitter Hashtags for Writers 40 Twitter Hashtags for Writers 40 Twitter Hashtags for Writers By Simon Kewin If you use Twitter, you’re probably already familiar with the idea of hashtags. These are simply a way of categorizing particular tweets by including within them a keyword prefixed with the hash or â€Å"pound† (#) symbol. So, for example, tweets containing writing advice will often contain the â€Å"#writetip† tag. The point of this is to make it easier to find all tweets containing writing advice : you just search for â€Å"#writetip†. Similarly, you could find a stream of publication tips by keeping an eye on tweets with â€Å"#pubtip† in them.   Using relevant hashtags in your own tweets also increases the likelihood of others seeing your post and becoming a follower. They’re a great way to engage with a particular community of Twitter users.   The following is a list of some of the hashtags that will be of interest to writers. The list can never be exhaustive because anyone can invent a new tag at any time. Most are self-explanatory, although some need explanation :  Ã¢â‚¬ ¨Ã‚   #amediting  Ã‚  posts from people who are editing #amwriting  Ã‚  posts from people who are writing #askagent  Ã‚  agent questions and answers #author #authors #editing #fictionfriday #fridayflash  Ã‚  flash fiction on a Friday #nanowrimo  Ã‚  national novel writing month #novels #novelists #poem #poet #poets #poetry #pubtip  Ã‚  publication tips #publishing #scifi #selfpublishing #vss  Ã‚  Ã‚  very short story #webfic  Ã‚  web fiction #weblit  Ã‚  Ã‚  web literature #wip  Ã‚  Ã‚  work in progress #wordcount #writegoal #writequote #writer #writers #writetip  Ã‚  writing advice #writing #writingtips  Ã‚  writing advice #wrotetoday  Ã¢â‚¬ ¨Ã‚   Some hashtags are specifically â€Å"chats† – which means they work in the same way as all tags, but are mainly used at certain agreed times :  Ã¢â‚¬ ¨Ã‚   #journchat #kidlitchat #litchat #scifichat #scribechat #storycraft #writechat #yalitchat   Ã‚  young adult literature chat  Ã¢â‚¬ ¨Ã‚   The following spreadsheet is a good place to keep track of the schedules for these Twitter chats if you’re interested in joining in :   http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=ruaz3GZveOsoXUOOt86B3AQ Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? A core concept across nursing theories Research Paper

A core concept across nursing theories - Research Paper Example Core concepts are the ideals upon which any practice is based. For most professions, core concepts are distinct to each, with practices like biology, sociology and psychology having their own concepts specifically applicable to their practice. These concepts are broadly defined in their metaparadigm, and such metaparadigms comprise of several major concepts.Such metaparadigms are considered to be the boundaries or limits of any practice. This is not much different in the nursing practice. The core concepts or metaparadigm of nursing, according to Fawcett (1984, as cited by Daniels and Daniels, 2004) include: person, environment, health, and nursing. These concepts help define and shape the nursing practice. While theorists have come up with different models for the practice in each area of nursing care, there are common concepts or threads to all these areas of nursing practice. Regardless of the area of nursing involved, the nurse will still be concerned with the following concepts: person, the environment, health, and nursing. In recent times, the concept of care has been included as an essential concept of nursing because it is crucial to the delivery of efficient nursing care (Daniels and Daniels, 2004). With these above considerations, this paper shall now identify a core concept which cuts across nursing theories. It shall compare and analyze the concept definitions based on the selected contemporary theories while considering the practical applications of these core concepts. Discussion A core concept which is common to two contemporary theories is the concept of nursing. This concept applies to the theories laid out by Dorothea Orem and Virginia Henderson. In her theory, Orem acknowledged the four concepts which comprise the nursing metaparadigm. She further defined human beings as â€Å"an integrated whole composed of an internal physical, psychologic, and social nature with varying degrees of self care ability (Chinn and Kramer, 2004). She also emphas izes that human beings are also self-care agents with different interdependent parts, which, when functionally sound, leads to contentment, pleasure, and happiness. When considering the concept of nursing, Orem sets forth that it is an art by which the nurse can deliver specialized care to individuals with disabilities requiring special assistance in compliance with daily needs for self-care (McLaughlin-Renpenning, 2002). In effect, nursing considers actions which are specifically chosen and delivered by nurses to guide individuals under their care in the sustenance and management of conditions in themselves or their general environment (Orem, 1985). In other words, the nursing conceptualization under Orem’s theory is founded on self-care and management; such care and management which is supported by a holistic nursing of the person’s needs and disabilities. Nursing under Orem is also based on nursing agency and nursing systems theory. These are elements which make up the nursing practice under the metaparadigm concept of ‘nursing.’ According to Orem, nursing agency is the human power and action qualities related to nursing practice. Its exercise includes the establishment of the legitimacy of a relationship; initial operationalization of interpersonal systems; and diagnosis related to patient variables (Bridge, Cabell, and Herring, n.d). The nursing systems theory emphasizes that nursing systems are seen when the nurses adopt and deliver care which manages a patient’s individual and self-care capabilities – and such care then applies to therapeutic self-care requirements (Kozier, Erb, and Blais, 1997). Orem also emphasizes the fact that humans need constant inputs in order to remain alive; that human agency is practiced through care of self and others; that mature humans experience hardships through the restrictions in their self-care; and that

Market Segmentation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Market Segmentation - Research Paper Example most important aspects of successfully promoting and advertising a product is the process of segmenting the market and ultimately choosing the target market that the product will be primarily sold to. The outcome of this research can be studied and analyzed in common public advertisements such as the online weekly ad for Sears. According to the book entitled Principles of Marketing, market segmentation is defined as â€Å"dividing a market into smaller groups of buyers with distinct needs, characteristics, or behaviors that might require separate marketing strategies or mixes†(Kotler and Armstrong, 2010, p. 191). There are many different ways to segment a market including geographically, demographically, psychographically, and behaviorally (Kotler and Armstrong, 2010, p. 193). Once the marketers have determined the different segments, they will typically choose a specific segment that they believe will be attracted to their product. Ultimately, this specific segment is known as a target market(Kotler and Armstrong, 2010). In looking at the weekly ad for Sears, it becomes clear that the company is seeking to reach a specific market. The front page of the ad states â€Å"Amazing back to school looks for Juniors†(Sears.com, 2011). In conjunction with these words, the ad features Audrina Patridge who is a young reality star who tends to be well known with younger crowds (Sears.com, 2011). The front page of this ad is trying to reach high school students who are about to go back to school and are likely going to buy new clothes. In presenting their advertisement, Sears has to compete against the many other clothing stores that are trying to reach the same market of young high school kids. At the same time, the store must try to reach the parents of these kids who typically are buying the clothes for their kids. In studying this ad, it would appear that this ad would be successful in reaching their audience. In gearing toward the parents, the ad includes a coupon

The Press Agentry Model

The Press Agentry Model Press agentry model was the earliest PR model. It comes out in the late 19th century Grunig Hunt, 1984. The heyday of this model from 1850 to 1900 and P.T. Barnum was the representative of the historical figure (Chao, 2012). Press agentry model is one-way communication as the flow of information is only from the sender to the receiver, i.e. source-to-receiver communication. People who send out the message are not much take no account of second partys response, comment, point of view and so on. Press agentry attempts to alter the act of publics whereas do not have the intention to change the behavior of the organization. Public relations whose are under press agentry struggle for publicity in the media in almost any way possible. Practitioners of press agentry have included so-called fathers of modern PR, Ivy Lee and Edward Bernays. In the early 20th Century, both were Broadway press agents, when Broadway was the capital of the entertainment world, before moving on. Bernays move into constructed news that accounts for audience perceptions and biases is a sophisticated form of press agentry. His 1915 80-page press packet for the Diaghilev Ballet Russe American tour was an early example, and his work in 1932 publicizing autos for General Motors with testimonials from business and academic leaders was more elaborate. Press agents did little research aside from monitoring the media in which they sought to place favorable articles about their clients. The prototype practitioner of this model was the American impresario P. T. Barnum. He promoted circuses and other entertainment venues such as the singer Jenny Lind. Publicity continues to be a component of contemporary American PR and is used in sports, entertainment and product publicity, although todays practitioners are less likely to take liberties with the truth. In Press Agentry publicity model, public relations expects enhance the reputation of the organization among the target audience, stakeholders, employees, partners, all other associated with it through manipulation. According to this model, hire public relations expects who create a positive image of their brand in the minds of target audience through arguments and reasoning. They influence their potential customers by simply imposing their ideas, thoughts, creative stories of their bran d, USPs of the products and so on. Flow of information takes place only from the public relations expects to the target audiences. (One-Way communication) Although J. Grunig and Hunt acknowledged that there had been public-relations-like activities throughout history, they claimed that the press agents of the mid-19th century were the first full- name specialists to practice public relations. These press agents practiced the press agentry/ publicity model of public relations for such heroes as Andrew Jackson, Daniel Boone, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Calamity Jane. The most prominent of these practitioners was P.T. Barnum, who skillfully promoted his circus performers using the axiom, There is a sucker born every minute. Curiosity and scepticism played a pivotal role in the success of the press agentry model in the 19th Century, as illustrated with Barnums stunt, and to this day it still does. Butterick (2009) points out that we only have to look at the inner editorial pages of the tabloid newspapers, the celebrity magazines or observe when a new movie or CD is launched to see the press agentry model in its purest form. Press agents like Max Clifford are often seen as masters of the industry, carefully manipulating the media coverage of their clients, as Butterick notes; even the so-called exclusive pictures of semi-naked celebrities on a beach in a Sunday newspaper can sometimes be the result of a collusion between the stars publicist and photographer. Nowadays, press agentry model is still very much in use in the 21st Century. It can easily argue that the ethics involved in this model are highly questionable, and the admission from Grunig Hunt that the model has an element of propaganda attached to it does nothing to distil the negative connotations attached to PR as propaganda (Butterick, 2009). However, despite these criticisms, it is ultimately that the curiosity and skepticism of which ensures the press agentry model is still alive and well in the modern day. Although the modern day PR practitioner must be more familiar with the truth, the very foundations of the model still exist whether it be to publicize a sporting event, a theatre production, or the scariest film of the decade, as in the recent movie release Paranormal Activity (2009). We, the public, will either want to believe what we see, or find out for ourselves if our skepticism can be proven correct which is why this model still works for practitioners seeking to g ain the illusive media spotlight and is therefore relevant for the 21st Century. Press agentry is closely associated with publicity in the entertainment world. Press agentry is the practice of attracting the attention of the press through technique that manufactures news. Methods associated with press agentry include staged events, publicity stunts, faux rallies or gatherings, spinning, and hype. A common practice is the late 1800s and early 1900s, press agentry is not part of mainstream public relations. Rather, it is a practice primarily associated with major entertainment-related events, such as Hollywood premieres and boxing matches. The goal of press agentry is to attract attention rather than gain understanding. Even today, however, the term press agent is sometimes used interchangeably with publicist in traditional Broadway theater and motion picture industries. Todays entertainment industries are populated with publicists rather than press agents. Publicists are individuals skilled in media relations who attempt to get the name of their clients or events in the media by carefully constructing messages that inform, educate, and persuade. Some are astute in branding and positioning strategies to aid the careers and success of their clients. In contrast, press agents want attention either good or bad in most any form. Press agentry had been called persuasion for short-term advantage through the use of truth bending and even distortion, but it can also be simply the staging of provocative acts to get publicity and draw attention to an individual, event, or cause. Therefore, it is understandable that one of the earliest proponents of press agentry was Phineas Taylor (P.T) Barnum, the famed American showman and promoter who put gun Gen. Tom Thumb on exhibit and launched a mobile circus featuring Jumbo the elephant and freak shows. Barnum was a master of press agentry. For instance, he wrote letters both praising and criticizing his circus show to newspaper under an assumed name. In the early part of his career, Edward L. Bernays was also a master of press agentry. He persuaded 10 debutantes to hold up Lucky Strike cigarettes manufactured by his client, the American Tobacco Company, as torches of freedom while participating in New Yorks Easter parade. In 1929, Bernays staged a global news event by organizing the Lights Golden Jubilee, a worldwide calebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the electric light bulb for his client, General Electric. Bernays managed to secure several prominent individuals for that event, including carmaker Henry Ford, electricity scientist Thomas Edison, and President Herbert Hoover. Henry Rogers, one of the founders of Rogers and Cowan, the largest and most successful West Coast entertainment publicity firm, became well known when he promoted an unknown contract player for Columbia Pictures named Rita Hayworth. He contacted Look magazine with a telegram from the Fashion Couturiers Association of America, a fictitious group, claiming that Hayworth was the best-dressed off-screen actress. Look magazine took the bait and put Hayworth on the cover and published 10 pages of her photographs. Characteristic of Press Agentry Press agentry is ink. A sales-driven approach does whatever it takes to get exposure for clients in the media without resorting to paid advertising. Press agentry is not above truth-bending or lying to reach its pragmatic objective. It will make up facts if it needs to do so. It is persuasion for short-term advantage. Press agentry is a long-standing part of PR, and it wont go away. Press agentry has transformed over the decades into ink with ethics, that is getting exposure while maintaining respect for facts, but if all else fails, getting exposure is more important than facts. Press agentry relies on spin. It is interpreting facts to fit ones view and to get media coverage. Christopher Buckleys hilarious novel, Thank You for Smoking lampoons this type of practitioner brilliantly, and post-presidential debate commentary from Democrats and Republicans is a quadrennial example of spinning. Press agentry includes any technique that manufactures news which are publicity stunts, faux surveys, fake committees, constructed events and other tactics practitioners continue to use. Propaganda classified as one of the characteristic of press agentry model (Grunig Hunt, 1984). The term of propaganda in press agentry model, refer to PR practitioner exaggerate and more hype than facts in order to get publicity for their client. They will not care the public feedback and just want the public behave as they want. This model involves a propaganda function (Grunig Hunt, 1984 pp. 21) and academics such as Butterick (2009), Theaker (2004), and Johnston Zawawi (2004) agree that accuracy and credibility are somewhat compromised as the goal of the model is to influence the audience by manufacturing news, be that by way of stunts or explicit publicity seeking. Butterick (2009) states that practitioners who use this model become press agents, utilising a range of PR tools from press releases to publicity stunts which in turn ensures that an audience takes a specific course of action.

Cross Cultural Communication Barriers Essay

LaRay Barna (1982) has elaborated on the distinction between observations and interpretation in cross cultural communication. Five areas of practice constitute potential barriers. In order to overcome these barriers, postpone interpretation until you know enough about the other culture. In other words observed behavior but try not to attach attribution to it. First, there’s the obvious barrier of language differences. Language is much more than learning new vocabulary and grammar. It includes cultural competence: knowing what to say and how, when, where, and why to say it. Knowing a little of the foreign language may only allow you to make a â€Å"fluent fool† of yourself. Also, within the same language the same word may have a different meaning in different settings. Ways to decrease the language barrier are [1] learn the language, [2] find someone who can speak the language as an interpreter, and [3] ask for clarification if you are not sure what someone says. Second, there is the area of nonverbal communication such as gestures, posture and other ways we show what we feel and think without speaking. Our culture has taught us to communicate through unspoken messages that are so automatic that we rarely even think about them. An interviewer might put his or her own cultural interpretation on your hand gesture, facial expression, posture, clothing, physical closeness or distance, eye contact, or personal appearance, and that attribution may not be what you intended to at all. Ways to cross the nonverbal communication area are [1] do not assume you understand any nonverbal signals or behavior unless you are familiar with the culture, [2] don’t take a stranger’s nonverbal behavior personally, even if it is insulting in your culture, and [3] develop an awareness of your own and nonverbal communication patterns that might be insulting in certain cultures. Third, stereotypes are a major barrier to communicating across cultures. We try to fit people into patterns based on a previous experience. We see pretty much what we want or expect to see and reject the possible interpretations that don’t fit with what we expect. If we expect people from country X to be unfriendly to foreigners, we will probably interpret their behavior in that way. Steps to overcome this barrier resemble the familiar triad, awareness-knowledge-skills, (that we discussed earlier in the chapter): [1] make every effort to increase awareness of your own preconceptions and stereotypes of cultures you encounter, [2] learn about the other culture, and [3] reinterpret their behavior from their cultural perspective, adapting your own stereotypes to fit your new experiences. A fourth barrier is the tendency to evaluate behavior from the other culture as good or bad, to make a judgment based on our own cultural bias. Evaluation has been called a third stage of how we attribute meaning. The first two, observation and interpretation, lead naturally to it. Different attitudes about, for instance, food and drink can cause misunderstanding as we evaluate them. Ways to decrease the tendency to evaluate our [1] maintain appropriate distance, [2] recognize that you cannot change the culture (or yourself) overnight, [3] do not judge someone from another culture by your own cultural values until you have first come to know them and their cultural values. The fifth barrier is the high level of stress that typically accompanies intercultural interactions. Like every other unfamiliar experience, intercultural contact is likely to involve some stress. Ways you can decrease stress are to [1] accept the ambiguity of cross cultural situations in which you are not sure what others expect of you or what you can expect of them, [2] work to reduce other intercultural barriers, and [3] be forgiving of others and yourself, giving both them and yourself the benefit of the doubt. In intercultural encounters, then, there are several filters that can prevent us from accurately understanding what others are trying to communicate, and that can prevent others from accurately understanding what we are trying to communicate: our tendency to interpret and evaluate behavior before we understand it, and our willingness to stereotype groups of people, which prevents us from interpreting behavior accurately. When we are looking and listening, the remedy is to try and increase the range of our perception, to observe and suspend our interpretation [what we think] and evaluation [what we feel], and to ask for clarification when in doubt. When speaking, we should take care to clarify the intention behind our words and check to see if the message has come across correctly. In all cases, we should be prepared for surprises.

Investment and Debt Capacity Free Essays

Stock Repurchase Repurchase of stock can be viewed in each of the following way: investment, financing, shareholder distribution and control issue. Repurchase of stock can be a way to use firm’s excess debt capacity. By doing so, firm can lower the cost of equity financing. We will write a custom essay sample on Investment and Debt Capacity or any similar topic only for you Order Now If debt financing is more flexible and cheap, replace equity financing with debt financing is a good way to lower the weighted cost of capital. In this sense, such action is a financing issue because it controls the cost of financing. On the other hand, repurchase of stock can adjust shareholder distribution. If shareholders consist of most individual investors, they may require more dividends or other forms of profit sharing. Firm can repurchase stocks from such investors so that they can adjust their dividend policy. If management holds few shares of the company, they may lose their control over operating and strategy decisions. By repurchasing stocks, management could regain majority control over the company on strategic decisions. Finally, repurchase of stock is also an investment issue because it enables the firm to increase its return on equity by eliminating dilution effect. Higher return on equity will attract more favorable investors as well as better vendors. It has the same outcome of investing in businesses, so it can be viewed as an investment. Debt Capacity for Stock Repurchase From Exhibit 5, we get the total debt of Marriott at the end of 1979. We define total debt as sum of short-term loan, current portion of long-term debt, senior debt and capital leases. The average market price of Marriott in 1979 was $14. 9, and interest rate for Baa corporate debt was 12%. We assume that Marriott would repurchase stocks at price of $15 using 12% debt financing. Marriott used Adjusted EBIT over net interest as a measure for debt capacity, so we use such measure as well. The table above shows the main assumptions we make in the analysis. Before the stock repurchase, EBIT adjusted/Net interest rate was 6. 64, above the 5 times threshold Marriott set for itself. Because the net interest before repurchase was $27. 8 million, we conclude that adjusted EBIT was $184. 59 million. In 1979, additional debt from repurchase was $159 million, making the total debt $538. 83 million. Net interest after repurchase is the original net interest plus the 12% interest from new debt. Based on such analysis, the new adjusted EBIT/Net interest ratio is 3. 94, which is lower than 5. So we conclude Marriott may not have enough debt capacity to finance the stock repurchase. We further perform a scenario analysis. Suppose Marriott had just enough debt capacity, which means new adjusted EBIT/Net interest ratio equals 5. We find that repurchase price should be $7. 17 so that Marriott could utilize its debt capacity fully. We conclude that a repurchase price under $7. 17 is in fact transferring value to remaining group because they can share more future profits resulting from the concentrated equity. Yet a repurchase of $15 is way above $7. 17, which means selling shareholders have more value because they are compensated with higher return. Owned vs Managed Marriot has two options about the operation of hotel chains. First, it can own the hotel and enjoy the profit margin. Second, it can sell the hotel but retain management contracts so it controls the operation of such units. Following is the detailed decomposition of costs associated with two options. According to Exhibit 9, in 1978 the typical cost for a hotel room consists of improvement cost, furniture, fixtures and equipment cost, land cost, pre-opening cost and operating cost. For an owned hotel, Marriot had to pay the total cost for running the property, but if it is managed, Marriot only had operating cost because the buyer was responsible for the maintenance. In an attempt to emphasize more on return on invested capital rather than margins, Marriot sold some of their existing hotels and retained management contract to free up capital. Managed hotels had operating margin of 8%-10%, while owned had 15%. We assume 10% margin for managed hotels and 15% for owned hotels. To decide when to sell the property, we analyze the remaining present value of future cash flow of a hotel at different point of time in its life cycle. We further assume that when the hotel is sold, the selling price is set so that present value of future cash flow equals the 10% margin. We assume $50 revenue per room night of a typical 150-room hotel, and one year has 360 days. Sales level for each year in the life cycle connects to the occupancy rate. From the graph of Exhibit 9, we get different occupancy rate for the whole life cycle. It reaches the peak 100% at year 8, and after year 10, it declines almost linearly to 10% in year 30. We can see that if Marriot sells the hotel before opening, the selling price would be $1. 63 million at time 0. After the peak, let’s say, year 9, the selling price would be $ 1. 55 million at time 9. We can also see that in fact the max value of PV is at year 4, which has $2. 85 million in PV at 15% margin. Marriot would free up more capital if it sells the hotel before opening, but instead it would lose more operating profit. If Marriot is in short of capital, it could sell the hotel up-front so that the freed up capital can be invested in other profitable projects. Selling after the peak is a good choice if Marriot wants to enjoy the increasing operating profit before the peak. Shareholder value can be added if the return on freed-up capital exceeds the profit loss from selling the property. Recommendation Based on our analysis, we would recommend the company to investing in their core business to fully use their debt capacity. Since Marriott’s debt capacity is only able to repurchase 10. 6 million shares at a price significantly lower its current trading price (according to Exhibit 12). It is unlikely the repurchase strategy would take place as expected. The negative impact of false interpretation that the Marriott has reached its growth limit may not be offset even if the repurchase take place. To decide whether to invest in core business or diversify by acquisition we take a look of the hotel’s current state. The company now is operating in four main sectors, hotel group, contract food service, restaurant group theme parks and cruise ships other. Based on exhibit 3, all of MC’s sectors are doing well in the past few periods; Hotel group is still the main profit sector account for 51% of the total operating profit and 16. % of the gross margin. Theme park and restaurant sectors have contributed a lot to total revenue but at the same time involve more risk. The asset associated with that new business couldn’t be mortgaged easily. Marriott’s theme park alone was estimated to cost 80 million but double of the estimation eventually, the investment made MC to lower its debt credit level. If we use the extra de bt capacity on acquisition of new business, there could be a higher risk of availability and cost of long-term debt financing, which may cause MC to lower its debt credit even lower and increase its defalt risk. As a company mostly processioned in hotel management, invest in new businesses that required new management style also increases MC’s operating risk. Marriott’s hotel business has positioned itself to operate for customers whose travel plans were less subject to change than those of vacationers. Its historical operation has showed steady healthy growth even in recessions. Most of the sector’s assets are real estates and tends to appreciate over time rather than depreciate, it is easy to issue debt secured by hotel assets. Prevailing trends also indicate sighs of need of rapid room expansion. As MC’s major competitors Hilton and Holiday Inn are shifting their core business to a more diversified market, keep focus on core hotel business enable MC to maintain its own competitive advantage in operation. Overall we would suggest MC to use its excess debt capacity to invest in existing hotel with some clientele base but lower entry cost where the Marriott‘s acquisition can significantly improve the operation. To invest in such assets, there is low research and construction cost but easy to manage with sustainable growth. We believe that the best investment for corporation would be investing in the existing business. The hotel business was the most promising area for Marriott’s Corporation. When MC’s competitors expand their business into gambling and casino ventures, MC was more likely to expand in the traditional market. To invest in the hotel business, a large amount of external financing is needed. A large amount of Marriott hotels were managed rather than owned by the MC. Despite the MC could limited capital investment by holding the equity up to 50% so that they could increase the opportunity to be awarded the management contract, they might still need to cost a lot in investing more hotels. MC could also choose to expand their existing hotels. Those hotels have higher occupancy rate and higher local demand. Doing this expansion will need full capital investment in property. With high growth rate of hotel rooms, this investment seems valuable. However, this way of investment still needs large amount of external financing to support the expanding. Even though MC’s new hotels are profitable in the end, the cost of developing hotels is still required a big financing. In addition, due to the increasing inflation rate, the cost of equity and the cost of debt increased. Therefore, as inflation rate becomes higher, the unused debt capacity becomes less in the future. Risk Analysis Model Strategies with Remanufacturing

Question: Describe about the Application of adversarial risk analysis model in pricing strategies with remanufacturing. Answer: 1. The initial price level of Sheridan in the year 1982 was set at $ 3.90 for the 104 carpet. When the price was increased from this level it observed that company suffered severe loss due to this decision. The marketing manager of the company Mel Walters also estimated that the company will be able to sell more than 630000 square yard of the carpets in the beginning of the year 1983. The company was further sure that it would be able to sell more than 150000 yard of the carpet material if it decided to drop the price back to $ 3.90. It was evident the the company would suffer loss in the share price if it decided to hold back the prices at $ 5.20 per carpet (Wu and Cheng-Han). The product was considered superior to many products when it was compared with other carpets in the market. Hence Walters was confident that even the price remained at $5.20, Sheridan will be able to sell a minimum of 65000 yard of the carpet volume. Despite of the fact that the company will be able to attract lot of customers at a price point of $ 5.20, it is not feasible for the company to set the price level of the carpet at this price range (Huang et al.). It was observed that the companys percentage share in the sale of the carpet in the year 1981 and 1982 was approximately 35% (192000/549000*100) and 181000/517500*100). At this point it can be observed that Sheridans pricing strategy was set at 5.20 which are same as the competitors pricing strategy. In the selling season at the end of the year 1982 the company decided to increase the price per square yard from $3.90 to $ 5.20 there was the fall observed in the overall selling price of the company with a sale volume of only 30% (135000/450000*100). Later on in the season it was further observed that the company was able to sell only 22.22%. (112500/562500*100) this decrease in the percentage of the company showed that it is not a good decision for the company to sell the existing carpets at a rate of $ 5.20. The previous decisions of the company lead to the reduction in the sales volume when the pricing strategy was set at $ 5.20 (Sato et al.). It was also observed by Rosen that the decision to keep the price at $ 3.20 would not impact on the competitors policy to set the price level. The other companies in the same line of the business will keep the same price of $ 3.90 and due to the specialized product quality of the company the company will be able to increase the sale volume and generate more amount of revenue. This would not have been possible if the company decided to keep the price level to $3.20. This was possible as there was no interdependence between the sales and other suppliers of the carpet existing in the market (Deng et al.). 2: If the company decided to holds its share price at $ 3.90, Sheridan needs to sell a total quantity of $ 41250 and will be able to earn a gross profit of $ 214500. The calculation of the same has been illustrated with the diagram as follows: Statement of Cost Profit:- Quantity : 150000 units Particulars Amount per unit Total Amount Sales Amount (A) : 3.90 585000 Cost of Goods Sold : Raw Material 0.52 78000 Materials Spoilage 0.049 7350 Direct Labor 0.962 144300 PRIME COST (B) 1.531 229650 Direct Depertment Overhead 0.13 19500 Indirect Department Overhead 0.52 78000 General Overhead 0.289 43350 FACTORY OVERHEAD ( C) 0.939 140850 COST OF GOODS SOLD (D=B+C) 2.47 370500 Gross Pofit (A-D) 1.43 214500 Calculation for Required Quantity:- Particulars Details Sale Price Per Unit 5.2 Total Gross Profit 214500 Required Sales Quanity 41250 3. Based on the available information it can be observed that there was no major interdependence between the sale of the carpets with the other carpets available for sale. It was observed that the company will be able to sell more than 630000 yard of the carpet material at a price per unit of $3.90. In this way the company would be able to keep the price competitive and at the same time able to achieve higher amount of sale and generate more revenue. This decision is ideal for the company in the beginning if the selling season of the year 1981 and the till the beginning of the selling season in the year 1982. The company may decide to increase the price per carpet in the end of the selling season 1982 this will enable the company to achieve higher amount of revenue (Oh et al.). 4. The companys decision to raise the price level at the end of the year 1982 was a good one as Sheridan was able to increase the volume of sales. In the year 1980 it was observed that the market share of Sheridan rose from 34.97% to 34.99% in the year 11981. Despite of this fact the sale revenue was observed to decrease from 1939600 to 1111500, this depicted a reduction in the sales volume by -42.69%. In the year 1982 the company decided to increase the selling price per unit and it was observed that the company was able to increase the total sales amount by 15.79%. Despite of the fact that companys market share and change in the total market share experienced a decrease, the company was able to increase the total sales volume by 1287000. Hence this shows that the companys decision to raise the price level in the year January of 1982 was a good one (Shen et al.). In the show the rationale and the comparison for consideration of this decision is shown below with the following details: Selling Season Industry Total Sale of Sheridan Market Share Change in Market Share Sheridan's Selling Price per Unit Total Sales Volume Change in Sales Volume 1980-1 549000 192000 5.2 998400 1980-2 517500 181000 5.2 941200 1980 1066500 373000 34.97% 1939600 1981-1 387000 135500 3.9 528450 1981-2 427500 149500 3.9 583050 1981 814500 285000 34.99% 0.017% 1111500 -42.69% 1982-1 450000 135000 5.2 702000 1982-2 562500 112500 5.2 585000 1982 1012500 247500 24.44% -10.546% 1287000 15.79% Reference List :- Deng, Liurui, and Bolin Ma. Softball, not only a sport but my life. free essay sample

Life is like a sporting event. The effort you put into practice are the result you see in the final event. There are both positives and negatives, but I have discovered that when things are negative is when you learn the most and grow as a player and as a person. In any sport you have people that will influence you that are on you team and your opponents. I have learned that once you get passed the obstacles, you flourish as a person. To me softball just hasn’t been a sport it has been my life and at times all I really had to look forward to. Throughout middle school softball really wasn’t my thing but once I got into high school it turned into my sport the only thing I ever wanted to do. It was the only sport that had ever challenged me mentally and made me learn real life lessons as well. We will write a custom essay sample on Softball, not only a sport but my life. or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My freshman year was the hardest year of my life especially the beginning. My rock the person I looked up to had gotten remarried and was moving out of the state to West Virginia. My dad leaving had impacted me greatly leaving me feeling lonely and upset about things I never had been upset about before. But luckily for me I found an outlet that helped me get through my struggles as a person. When I felt sad I had a team to make me smile, or mad I had something different to focus on. Softball taught me to trust people more and be more open. Softball at that point in life was not just a sport but it was my life my only way of feeling satisfied with me as a person but also with everything at home. The coaches and teammates I had throughout high school inspired me to be better, push the limit, and strive to be the best. At practice I not only wanted to survive my conditioning workouts but do them to my fullest potential and push the limit. Soon after that I not only found myself wanted to use my fullest potential on the field but with everything I did in life school work, chores, and just at being a friend. I had struggled with two things in softball keeping a positive attitude and hitting. So I kept working on my hitting and got disciplined at the plate only picking pitches I was sure I could get a piece of. This discipline helped me with everything making good decisions, completing my homework to my fullest potential, and being the best person I could possibly be. My positive attitude was harder to work on though. It took me lots of growing up and mental determination to push through only relying on the negatives and look at all the good things I had done. By defeating my negative toughest hurdle I had become an optimistic and positive person. Softball has helped to be determined, be the best possible person I can be, and figure out how to through tough things in life. Constantly being in a competitive environment had helped me in the classroom and with life a lways wanting to be my best. Without softball being there to push me I don’t believe I would be where I am at in my life today, a hardworking confident optimistic person always striving to be my best and work harder to get better at any task I am trying to complete. For me softball was not just a game it was my foundation my everything, something I could never leave behind.
